Plan for a Blue Iris Year
So, blue, specifically "Blue Iris", is the color of 2008.
So says Pantone in a press release. They describe it as
"a beautifully balanced blue-purple, as the color of the year for 2008. Combining the stable and calming aspects of blue with the mystical and spiritual qualities of purple, Blue Iris satisfies the need for reassurance in a complex world, while adding a hint of mystery and excitement."
Ah, reassurance in a complex world. I need that. Perhaps I need to redo the style sheet for this blog and get away from my autumnal color palette.
Who's Pantone to decide? They are self-described as "the world-renowned authority on color." They have been around for more than 40 years, and most design professionals seem to use their products or services.
Blue Iris immediately reminds me in name and look of those Van Gogh paintings that my wife loves. I have been looking at his iris series for years so I find them very peaceful.
I also heard a radio news story that said that the "green" movement in environmentalism will be using blue in much of its literature, ads and web sites. (Perhaps, it will be an Ocean Blue.)
At the end of 2006, Thomas Friedman (New York Times columnist and author of The World is Flat) was commenting on the environment and acting "green" and he wrote:
"For so many years the term "green" could never scale. It was trapped in a corner by its opponents, who defined it as liberal, tree-hugging, girly-man, unpatriotic, vaguely French. No more. We reached a tipping point this year where living, acting, designing, investing and manufacturing green came to be understood by a critical mass of citizens, entrepreneurs and officials as the most patriotic, capitalistic, geopolitical, healthy and competitive thing they could do. Hence my own motto: Green is the new red, white and blue.
I'm okay with a blue iris year. I'm going to put on my Miles Davis "Kind of Blue" CD now.
