A New Player on the Open Source LMS Field
Instructure, a course-management software company, announced that it would make most of its software platform available for free under an open-source license. The company could offer new competition for Moodle and Sakai, the two leading open-source platforms.
On the company's blog, it describes itself this way: "We are Instructure, and our goal is to disrupt the Learning Management System (LMS) market by setting a new standard for education technology. We’re all about openness, usability, communication, and reliability."
Instructure intends to make money from colleges by supporting, hosting, and extending its software. The company’s Canvas platform allows instructors and students to manage course materials, grades, and discussions online.
The company claims it has contracts with 25 colleges and, in late 2010, the company won a bid to provide software to a group of Utah colleges serving about 110,000 students. Desire2Learn filed a lawsuit after their competing bid was rejected, but the suit was quickly withdrawn.
