How Flat Is Your Classroom?
The idea of a "flat classroom" originally was based on the constructivist principle of a multi-modal learning environment that is student-centered and with a level playing field for teacher-to-student and student-to-teacher interaction.
Then, Thomas Friedman came out with his The World Is Flat (now in a 3.0 version) and The Flat Classroom Project started, and the idea of a flat classroom changed. Now, a good number of teachers are working on global collaborative projects that join together students (mostly middle and senior high school students) to explore some of the concepts presented in the book.
The original project was by Vicki Davis (USA) and Julie Lindsay (Qatar) back in 2006. Teachers who do the project traditionally do it in October-December. The circle came around when Friedman featured the project in his updated edition of the book.
If you're looking for a good online fall project to get tech in your classroom that is tested and widely admired, this may be it.
