Edupunk

1980 in good old punky New Jersey

Do you embrace edupunk?

What? You never even heard of it?

Edupunk is an approach to teaching and learning. (I'm guessing most edupunkers might want to avoid saying "pedagogy" - unless it helps to get the grant.)

It seems to follow the do-it-yourself (DIY) attitude that is also popular today. Some say it is "inventive teaching and learning."

What might fall under edupunk?  Rejecting mainstream tools like PowerPoint and Blackboard might get you some punk classroom cred. Objecting to government and corporate interests in making one-size-fits-all decisions and products that embrace those decisions would be a positive punk step.

Stephen Downes, online education theorist and an editor for the International Journal of Instructional Technology and Distance Learning, identified three aspects: Reaction against commercialization of learning. Do-it-yourself attitude. Thinking and learning for yourself.

Of course, I had to check Wikipedia on this, and that poster child for inaccurate information (but I love it, so there) has its doubts about edupunk, as of today.

An editor has expressed concern that this article may be documenting a neologism. This new term needs more reliable sources.

Neologisms are words and terms that have recently been coined, generally do not appear in any dictionary, but may be used widely or within certain communities. Protologisms are neologisms that have not yet caught on widely. (In fact, "protologism" is a neologism to be avoided.)

The use of neologisms should be avoided in Wikipedia articles because they are not well understood, are not clearly definable, and will have different meanings to different people. Determining which meaning is the true meaning is not only impossible, it is original research as well—we don't do that here at Wikipedia.

The term was first used on May 25, 2008 by Jim Groom in his blog, and then picked up within days and used in the Chronicle of Higher Education.

What's one edupunk thing you do in the classroom?
