Today is Firefox 3 Download Day
What is Download Day? It's today and it's the day that version 3 of the Firefox browser becomes available. It's also an attempt by the Mozilla folks to set a world record for the most software downloads in 24 hours.
Firefox is my preferred browser for Windows and on a Mac. There are lots of reasons. Primarily, it's because it's a non-profit and open project. Firefox offers so many easy connections (plug-ins, add-ons etc.) to other programs that I use. Eventually, Internet Explorer offers some of those features too, but they are usually first found in Firefox. I would use it just becuase it has a built-in spell check that I use constantly for things like these blog posts and any other writing I do in my browser (which is more and more lately).
Why does it get the new features first? Because Mozilla is a global community, a public benefit organization and a technology for developers and users alike. They promote promote openness and opportunity on the Internet, rather than business concerns, like profits or the price of stock. Mozilla's Firefox Web browser has over 150 million users. The Mozilla Foundation is a non-profit organization that sponsors the Mozilla project and promotes the principles of the Mozilla Manifesto.
Firefox is only one of dozens of applications powered by Mozilla. Some of these are non-profit, public benefit efforts, such as the Thunderbird email client and the Miro video player. Other applications are created by groups of volunteers such as Camino, SeaMonkey and Sunbird.
Commercial companies are also using Mozilla's open source code to create products such as Songbird, eMusic Remote, Flickr Uploadr, TomTom HOMEand many more.
